Woven Sportswear Labels: Approve the Fold and Sew-In Area

A logo proof does not show how much of a woven label will remain visible after folding and sewing. This buyer guide connects the artwork to the folded component and the actual sportswear seam. Three label suppliers' technical pages were reopened on 3 November 2026.

Quick Answer

What Should OEM and sourcing Buyers Know?

Release a woven label against three connected references: the dimensioned unfolded drawing, the intended folded appearance and the label sewn into the proposed garment. Identify the visible artwork area separately from folds and sew-in borders, show which face points outward, and agree where the stitching goes. Approving a logo image alone leaves those construction decisions unresolved.

Choose the attachment route before finishing the artwork

Dutch Label Shop's attachment guide describes different sewing routes for flat, end-fold and centre-fold labels. Flat labels may be stitched around their perimeter; end-fold labels are attached at their folded edges; centre-fold labels can have their open ends caught together inside a seam. These descriptions show why fold choice and attachment belong in the same brief.

Buyer application: identify the intended garment location before ordering the component. A neck label on a facing and a flag label at a side seam need different drawings even if the brand mark is identical. Ask the garment supplier to show which edges are secured and which remain free. Do not assume that a component described as a woven brand label arrives ready for every possible seam.

Separate visible size from the material taken into the seam

LABELPARTNERS' folds-and-edges guide distinguishes the configured label dimensions from folds and sew-in borders. Its centre-fold ordering instructions add borders under that supplier's own convention. This is a useful example of a purchasing ambiguity: two drawings with the same stated size may describe different visible and overall dimensions if their measurement conventions differ.

Our recommendation is to request a dimensioned component drawing showing the complete cut size, fold positions, visible front and back areas and the material that enters the garment seam. Name the units and identify which size is being quoted. Ask whether allowances are already included or will be added. Confirm that answer on the order rather than assuming one supplier's default border applies to another. This guide does not prescribe a universal allowance for all woven labels.

Keep lettering out of folds and stitching zones

Wunderlabel's bespoke woven-label instructions connect the uploaded artwork dimensions with the selected label size and give separate guidance for middle-fold artwork and seam allowances. The page also warns that shadows and very small granular details cannot be woven into the design. Those are that supplier's production instructions, not a promise that any logo will reproduce accurately at any scale.

Buyer application: place the artwork inside the agreed visible area on the supplier's drawing, then mark the fold and sewing zones as construction information. Check small lettering and narrow spaces on a physical woven sample rather than enlarging a screen preview. If a designer changes the label size, ask for the artwork to be checked again. Preserve the accepted logo revision, colour references and drawing together so a later component order does not reuse the right logo on the wrong fold layout.

Show front, back and reading direction explicitly

For a centre-fold label, Dutch Label Shop describes a loop construction with both open ends sewn into the seam and both sides potentially viewable. Buyer inference: a flat graphic supplied without a fold direction may leave the final reading orientation unclear. Resolve that on the component drawing before a sample is treated as approved.

Our suggested proof pack includes the unfolded artwork, a simple folded view and a placement view on the garment. Mark the intended front, the back and the edge entering the seam. If size or other variable copy appears on the reverse, show that specific arrangement as well. Keep verified product-information wording under its separate approval; this construction guide does not establish destination-specific labelling compliance. A brand-label fold decision should not silently become approval of every statement printed or woven nearby.

Approve the component on the proposed sportswear construction

Our recommendation is to review a woven sample sewn into the actual proposed location and fabric combination. Check that the agreed artwork remains visible, the fold sits as intended and the attachment does not create an unwanted twist. Examine the wearer-facing side as well as the logo face. A loose label can demonstrate the weave and colour but cannot show the finished seam interaction.

For a jersey and a tracksuit using the same branding, identify whether their fabric and attachment routes are genuinely shared. Do not copy an approval automatically between a lightweight jersey side seam and a jacket facing. Record observations about the edge, local bulk and wearer contact without claiming a comfort or durability result that has not been assessed. If a care review is requested, agree its conditions and identify the tested label-and-garment combination. This article claims no completed Olinc label test.

Release a traceable label version with the order

Use an original six-field release record: component code; artwork revision; unfolded and visible dimensions; fold and sew-in drawing; garment placement and attachment reference; accepted physical sample and reviewer. Record unresolved items as open. If the sample hides part of the brand name, keep that failed reference and request a corrected drawing or assembly rather than approving a more flattering photograph.

Send Olinc Sports the garment references, intended label positions, logo files, proposed dimensions, quantities and destination with the private-label enquiry. Ask the supplier to confirm the component and garment sampling route before bulk release. Retain the approved drawing and sewn reference for reorders; a replacement label supplier, fold or attachment arrangement needs a documented review of the affected details. This gives a club brand or distributor a checkable instruction without inventing a universal minimum quantity, development fee or delivery date.

Buyer checklist

Turn The Research Into A Quote Brief.

01

Name the size convention

State whether dimensions describe the unfolded component, folded label or visible artwork area.

02

Draw the sewing zones

Separate fold positions and seam insertion from the part of the logo intended to remain visible.

03

Confirm reading direction

Show front, back and garment-facing orientation before approving the physical component.

04

Retain the sewn reference

Connect the accepted label revision to the actual garment fabric, placement and attachment.

Buyer FAQs

Questions To Resolve Before Production.

Is a logo proof enough to approve a woven label?

No. It may show artwork but leave cut size, fold positions, sew-in allowance and garment orientation unresolved. Request a dimensioned component drawing and a sewn sample for the proposed attachment.

Do all woven labels use the same sewing allowance?

No universal allowance is prescribed here. Supplier conventions and garment constructions differ. Confirm whether borders are included in the quoted dimensions, where stitching will fall and what area remains visible.

Can the same label be used on a jersey and a jacket?

It may be proposed for both, but the attachment and fabric combination need review. Do not assume a label accepted in one seam has automatically been approved in a different facing or garment position.

Does fold approval confirm legal label wording?

No. This guide addresses the physical component and its attachment. Verified fibre, care, origin or other required product information needs its own review for the actual destination.
