World Rugby's 2026 Laws of the Game state in Law 4 that all items of clothing must comply with Regulation 12. The same law identifies the standard playing clothing as a jersey, shorts and underwear, socks and boots, and requires a jersey sleeve to extend at least halfway from the shoulder point to the elbow. It also identifies prohibited items and gives the match official authority to decide that an otherwise permitted item is liable to cause injury. ISO 3801 defines methods for determining mass per unit length and mass per unit area for woven fabrics, including woven stretch fabrics. Its scope also explains that structure can create an important distinction between mass per length and mass per area. This is a useful warning for sourcing: a quoted mass value needs a named unit and method, and the method must suit the actual construction. Many performance jerseys use knitted or mesh constructions, so the buyer should ask the supplier or laboratory which mass method applies instead of attaching an inapplicable standard number to the tech pack.

Mass per unit area can help confirm that a delivered fabric matches an approved reference, but it does not disclose fibre blend, knit or weave structure, yarn, finish, pore geometry, stretch recovery, seam behaviour, abrasion endpoint or dimensional change. The ISO summary says the method applies to straight seams and is mainly applicable to woven fabrics, including woven fabrics with stretch characteristics, while noting that it can apply to fabrics made by other techniques. It does not claim that one result or one threshold suits every jersey construction.

For a rugby jersey, the buyer should identify the seam being assessed, fabric combination, stitch and seam type, thread, direction of applied force, specimen condition and current method edition. Straight sample seams may not represent a curved neck, raglan junction or multi-panel underarm intersection. ISO 13938-1:2019 describes a hydraulic method for bursting strength and bursting distension and states that it can apply to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics in conditioned or wet states. A bursting method loads a specimen differently from a straight seam test, which can make it relevant when a buyer wants to understand multidirectional fabric behaviour. The brief still needs to state which panel is tested, whether the specimen is conditioned or wet, the reporting units and the agreed decision rule.

ISO 12947-2:2016 addresses abrasion resistance by determining specimen breakdown through inspection at fixed intervals. Its ISO page says the method applies broadly to textile fabrics but excludes coated fabrics where the coated surface is the subject of the abrasion assessment. A rugby program may use abrasion review for selected body, shoulder or side-panel materials, but the buyer should not invent a universal cycle requirement. Connect Washing Results To The Approved Size And Artwork

ISO 5077:2007 specifies a method for determining dimensional change in fabrics, garments or other textile articles after an appropriate combination of specified washing and drying procedures. The words appropriate combination matter: the buyer must connect the test to an agreed care route and state how measurements are taken. A percentage without the wash procedure, drying procedure, measurement locations and specimen identity is not a complete approval record.

Measure the approved jersey before and after the agreed care sequence at the chest, body length, sleeve, opening and any other controlled point. Recheck collar shape, seam puckering, panel alignment, number and sponsor appearance, colour transfer, opacity and hand feel.
