Start With The Buyer Decision, Not The Report Title
Before requesting a test, write the decision it must support. A buyer may need to compare two fabric articles, accept a seam construction, verify change after laundering, approve an artwork method or release a complete garment. Those are different questions. A report headed performance fabric is not useful unless it identifies the specimen, method, conditioning, direction, preparation, units, result and agreed acceptance criterion.
ISO 139:2005 defines standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing the physical and mechanical properties of textiles and allows an alternative atmosphere where the parties agree. ISO reports the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025. The practical point is not to copy a temperature and humidity from a summary. The buyer should require the report to state the atmosphere and conditioning route actually used so later results can be interpreted and compared.
Build an evidence request by style and risk. A lightweight training shirt may need fabric appearance, wash and dimensional checks. A tight rugby panel may put more attention on seam and stretch behaviour. A private-label tracksuit may add zipper, elastic, embroidery and label interactions. Do not order the same test list for every product merely because the laboratory offers a standard package.

Know What A Fabric Abrasion Report Does And Does Not Prove
A fabric report is strongest when the tested specimen can be traced to the production material. Record the supplier article, fibre statement, knit or weave, colour, finish, mass per unit area, lot or roll reference and test direction. If bulk material changes, the old report may no longer represent the new order even when the marketing name and nominal GSM remain the same.
ISO 12947-2:2016 specifies a Martindale procedure that determines specimen breakdown by inspection at fixed intervals. ISO states that it applies broadly to textile fabrics but not coated fabrics, for which other methods are referenced. This is an abrasion endpoint method. It does not establish pilling, colourfastness, seam rupture, garment fit or wearer comfort, and the ISO page does not provide a universal sportswear pass number.
A buyer should state the abrasion method, face under test, specimen preparation, inspection intervals, endpoint definition and acceptance value agreed for the product. Keep the result beside the exact material record. A higher cycle result from a different construction, finish, laboratory route or endpoint cannot be compared as if every other variable were controlled.

Treat Seam Evidence As A Construction Result
Seam behaviour belongs to the joined construction, not to fabric alone. Specify the two material panels, seam type, stitch class, thread, stitches per unit length, seam allowance, needle route and specimen direction. Mesh-to-body, rib-to-collar and woven-to-stretch panels may need separate decisions because their materials and seam geometry differ.
ISO 13935-2:2026, published in April 2026, determines maximum force to seam rupture when force is applied perpendicular to a straight seam using the grab method. ISO describes the method as applicable to woven fabrics, including certain stretch woven fabrics, and potentially applicable to other textile techniques. It is limited to straight seams and is not a method for curved seams. Those scope limits should appear in the buyer's interpretation.
A straight laboratory seam result cannot approve a curved armhole, collar, crotch or panel junction without additional evidence. Use it to compare the defined specimen or confirm an agreed construction target. Then inspect the production-representative garment for skipped stitches, seam grin, puckering, edge exposure, bulk, stretch recovery and movement at the actual seam locations.

Do not accept a report that says wash passed without the complete procedure. ISO 6330:2021 specifies domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing. Its public summary lists 16 washing procedures for Type A front-loading reference machines, 12 for Type B top-loading agitator machines and seven for Type C top-loading pulsator machines, plus six drying procedures. It states that a complete test combines washing and drying.
ISO 3759:2011 specifies preparation, marking and measurement of textile fabrics, garments and assemblies used in dimensional-change testing. ISO says it applies to woven and knitted fabrics and made-up textile articles. ISO 5077:2007 then provides the method for determining dimensional change after an appropriate combination of specified washing and drying procedures. The three records work together; an unexplained shrinkage percentage does not show how the specimen was prepared, treated or measured.
For a finished jersey, identify the length, chest, sleeve, collar opening and any panel dimensions that affect fit or artwork. For shorts or trousers, include waist, rise, hip, inseam and opening where relevant. Mark the measurement points before treatment, record the chosen wash and dry route, number of cycles and result by direction, and photograph distortion or decoration effects that a percentage alone cannot describe.

Use The Finished Garment To Approve What Reports Cannot Show
A finished-garment approval should represent the intended bulk construction. Record the style, size, material articles, colours, panels, seams, thread, trims, elastic, closures, decoration, labels and care route. Compare finished measurements with the approved specification, then review artwork position, edge quality, shade interaction, label data, workmanship and the effect of the full garment after the agreed treatment.
Fit and movement need the intended wearer or fit model, underlayers and equipment. A football jersey must be checked over the defined pad profile. A rugby or GAA shirt should be reviewed through relevant movement in the chosen fit. A training top may need layering allowance. These checks are not laboratory substitutes; they are product-use evidence that a fabric strip or straight seam specimen cannot provide.
The sample record should say exactly what is approved and what remains open. If colour, decoration or a trim is provisional, name the outstanding item and prevent bulk release until it closes. Link the signed sample to the same revision identifiers used in the test reports. This stops a passing result from one material or seam being attached to a different bulk construction.
