How To Accept A Sliotar Order Without Confusing Specification With Approval

The GAA's current information page says Smart Sliotars contain a chip that can be read through the Foireann app and are used primarily for verification in Senior, U20 and Minor inter-county official games. It describes Match Sliotars as the other official-game sliotars produced by GAA licensees and meeting GAA specifications. The downloadable 2026 list separates six Smart Sliotar licensees from the longer Match Sliotar licensee list for all other levels and grades. Because the page labels the list subject to change, the buyer should open the live GAA document on the purchase date and retain the relevant version with the order record.

Do not replace that check with a product photograph, a claimed grade or a dimensional test. A ball may be suitable for training, club promotion, retail development or private-label sampling without being eligible for an official GAA game. Olinc Sports is not named on the GAA's 2026 Smart or Match Sliotar licensee list checked on 12 August 2026, so Olinc product pages must not be treated as evidence of GAA approval. A buyer asking about official use should identify the exact competition and obtain current written confirmation from the governing authority before ordering; a buyer sourcing non-official products should label that intended use clearly in the quote brief.

The GAA's published official-game specification gives six visible or measurable controls. Diameter, excluding the rim, is 69-72 mm; mass is 110-116 g; rim height is 1.8-2.6 mm; rim width is 3.6-5.4 mm; and the chrome or synthetic leather cover is 1.8-2.7 mm thick with any laminated coating no greater than 0.15 mm. The colour instruction is fluorescent yellow or high-vis Pantone 388 with red stitching. Put each field into the purchase specification with its unit, range, measurement point and the instrument or reference used for checking it.

The inspection sheet should not convert those ranges into a vague statement such as regulation size. Record each sampled ball's mass and diameter separately, identify how the rim dimensions and cover construction will be verified, and compare the production colour with the approved physical reference under consistent light. Keep the approved reference ball and its signed data sheet under the same job code. These checks make a non-official training or private-label order more repeatable, but they do not grant a licence or prove compliance with every GAA performance test. A single label marked Gaelic games is not enough to define the ball. The GAA recommends that hurling games from Minor U17 upward use a fluorescent yellow or high-vis sliotar from a GAA licensee. Its 2026 document then distinguishes Smart Sliotar use for specified inter-county levels from Match Sliotar use at other levels and grades. Before a club, school or distributor builds a quantity, ask which code, age grade, competition and playing authority will receive each line item. Split the order where match eligibility, training use or youth specifications differ.

Camogie adds another reason to record the governing route. The Camogie Association's current 2024-2027 playing rules say that for under-18 and other formats, the relevant clubs, boards, councils and education bodies may adapt the size, weight and material of the sliotar through approved competition rules. A buyer should therefore request the applicable competition rule or written instruction instead of copying an adult hurling specification into every youth or camogie order. The quote sheet should show one use per SKU, including code, age band, competition, colour, intended approval status and destination.

The GAA's research tender explains why an incoming inspection needs more than a scale and calliper. It identifies coefficient of restitution, or bounce and liveliness, as a key criterion and also names deformation and reformation behaviour and Shore hardness as factors that affect performance. The document says the GAA uses randomised laboratory and field tests and was seeking a more automated interaction system because player skill, fatigue and hurley type can affect strike-based results. A buyer should avoid promising equal play performance from dimensional conformity alone.

For a private-label or training range, define which performance checks the supplier must report, the conditioning state of the ball, the test setup and the approved comparison sample. Do not accept descriptions such as lively, championship feel or premium bounce as inspection criteria. If the buyer does not own a validated performance method, state that limitation and use controlled comparative testing against the approved sample rather than presenting the result as governing-body certification. Any claim about official use still returns to the current licensee and competition check.

A factory sample and a shipment lot answer different questions. The approved sample locks the agreed construction, appearance, markings and packing presentation; the pre-shipment inspection decides whether the production lot meets the written acceptance plan. ISO 2859-1:2026 provides AQL-indexed single, double and multiple sampling schemes for inspection by attributes and includes switching rules for normal, reduced and tightened inspection. A buyer who wants an ISO-based plan should obtain and apply the actual standard rather than asking the factory to perform an undefined AQL check.

The purchase order should name the lot definition, inspection level or agreed sample plan, defect classes and acceptance or rejection rule. For sliotars, visible attributes can include colour mismatch, broken or loose stitching, distorted rims, incomplete marks, surface damage, mixed SKU labels and incorrect pack counts. Measured characteristics such as mass and diameter need their own recorded values and tolerances. State what happens after a failed result: sort and re-inspect, replace affected units, or hold the lot for buyer review. AQL is a sampling decision system, not permission to ship known defects and not proof of official approval.

Finish the acceptance brief at carton level. Specify units per inner pack, inners per master carton, SKU and grade wording, colour, quantity, gross and net weight fields, carton sequence and destination marks. If retail tags or private-label packaging are required, approve the exact artwork and barcode data separately from the ball print. Photograph the open carton, closed carton, carton marks and sampled units during final inspection so the delivery team can trace a shortage or mixed grade back to a packing unit.

Archive the signed reference sample, specification revision, approval-status evidence, inspection report, measured data, colour reference, print artwork, packing layout and final carton list together. For a reorder, recheck the live governing-body source and competition instruction instead of copying the prior season's approval claim. Then compare the new pre-production sample with the retained reference and issue a new revision when material, core, cover, stitch, marking or packing changes. This record gives clubs and distributors a clear route to repeat non-official stock while keeping any official-use decision under the responsible governing authority.
